TSA Study Reports Violent Truck Hijackings and Cargo Theft on the Rise

Violent truck hijackings and cargo thefts are increasing worldwide. Cargo theft gangs and organized criminal networks target truck drivers at port cities, highway rest stops, truck yards and other locations to steal shipments, often in a violent manner. Some of the violent attacks in recent months ended with severe physical assault and in some cases, the murder of the truck driver. Cargo typically targeted by thieves include electronics, pharmaceuticals, cigarettes and sporting goods. Cargo theft accounted for an estimated $50 billion in cargo losses in 2006. Intelligence reports have not proven a link between the rise in hijackings and terrorism, however some analysts believe it is likely that terrorists will hijack trucks and use their profits to fund terrorist networks.
